Washington, DC—Representative Barbara Cubin sent a letter this week to former President Jimmy Carter urging him to cancel his planned meeting with Khaled Meshaal, the leader of Hamas. Representative Cubin’s letter also asks for an explanation from Mr. Carter about what he plans to accomplish from meeting with the terrorist leader. Meshaal is a known supporter of terrorism, and his organization has been responsible for countless attacks and the deaths of hundreds of innocent Israeli civilians. Hamas is also directly responsible for the deaths of at least 26 American citizens

The State Department has designated Hamas as a “Foreign Terrorist Organization” (FTO). Hamas joins the ranks of organizations like Al Qaeda and Hezbollah with its classification as an FTO. One of the components of the State Department’s strategy to squelch support for FTOs is to prohibit any United States citizen from offering “material support,” or providing “expert advice or assistance” to FTOs. The ultimate goal is to stigmatize and isolate terrorist organizations. Jimmy Carter is doing the exact opposite by meeting with Meshaal, as he is doing so while representing the United States. Even though he has stated he is not a U.S. representative on this trip, he is a representative by default as he is a former President of our great country.

“By meeting with Meshaal, Jimmy Carter sends a message that he condones the actions of Hamas. This is quite a dangerous message to convey. I urge former President Carter to cancel his meeting, which is scheduled for Friday, April 18. It is not too late to do so and the cancellation will mean a public repudiation of acts of terrorism. Something everyone, including a former president, should do,” Cubin stated. “If Mr. Carter goes through with his scheduled meeting with the terrorist leader, he will be directly contradicting, if not downright attempting to undermine U.S. policy altogether. I hope Mr. Carter responds to my letter and offers an explicit explanation of what his purpose was in meeting with Meshaal,” Cubin concluded.

The letter Representative Cubin sent to Mr. Carter is attached to this release.
