Barrasso Slams Overstuffed Democrat Budget Video Clip
Senator Works to Protect Wyoming Economy
3/13/08
WASHINGTON – U.S. Senator John Barrasso, R-Wyo., condemned Democrats over their grossly bloated 2009 budget. In his speech to the Senate, Barrasso spoke on issues vital to Wyoming such as cutting taxes, spurring economic growth, and slashing government spending.
“We achieve economic progress in Wyoming when the government gets out of the way,” Barrasso said. “That is the spirit that powers our state. We should unlock the American entrepreneurial spirit that made this country an economic leader.”

The Chávez Democrats

What is it about Democrats and Hugo Chávez? Even as the Venezuelan strongman was threatening war last week against Colombia, Congress was threatening to hand him a huge strategic victory by spurning Colombia's free trade overtures to the U.S.

Congress Endorses Post-Bush Tax Hikes

Under Democrat Congress, Americans Pay Record Prices at the Pump -- AGAIN
3/11/08
“The cost of filling up your gas tank has hit a new record. Average prices at the pump are at a new high of almost $3.23 a gallon. …
That is slightly higher than the previous record of $3.2265 a gallon, set last May.”

Senate Democrats Told Americans They Would Not Raise Taxes But Their New Budget Creates The Largest Tax Increase In American History
3/7/08
“Meanwhile the Bush tax cuts, which are scheduled to expire at the end of 2010, are not part of the revenue baseline…. Paygo thus virtually guarantees a gigantic tax increase in 2011.”

3/6/08
ON TAXES:
SENATOR HARRY REID (D-NV): “At a time when middle-class Americans are already struggling with rising costs and stagnant wages, it is unacceptable to raise their taxes.” (Sen. Reid, “Democrats Denounce Republican Attempts To Raise Taxes On Middle Class,” Press Release, 09/26/06) —

Iraq on the “Back Burner” for Democrats
Clyburn Prediction Proves True as Democratic Leaders Delay Troop Funding, Avoid Discussing Positive News in Iraq
11/9/07
Democrats continue delaying passage of troop funding requested 277 days ago that is needed to support America’s men and women in combat in Afghanistan and Iraq. House Appropriations Chairman David Obey has said: “The president isn’t going to get a supplemental this year. The president sooner or later is going to need that supplemental”.

Department of Defense Funding
Jon Kyl (R-Ariz.) today released the following statement regarding the Senate’s consideration of Department of Defense appropriations legislation
11/8/07
“While defense funding is more than a month past due, its approval tonight is a victory for Republicans who have fought so hard for this crucial funding. Unfortunately, Senate Democrats blocked funding for troops in Afghanistan and Iraq as part of the defense bill. This delay in troop funding is inexcusable. Congress should never leave our military without the resources it needs to battle al-Qaeda and keep America secure.
“While many Democrats oppose legislation to support our troops in combat, our obligation to those troops must transcend politics. We must quickly approve this funding to help ensure the safety and success of our nation’s soldiers.”
|
Border Security Funding
Jon Kyl (R-Ariz.) today released the following statement
11/8/07
“Republicans strongly object to Democrats’ refusal to fund border security in the Department of Defense spending bill. Just last month, the Senate voted 95 to 1 in favor of an amendment to add $3 billion in border security funding to this bill. Despite strong bipartisan support for the amendment, Democratic leaders chose to strip these funds from the final version of the bill. In removing these funds, Democrats are sending the American people the troubling message that they are not serious about securing the border.
“An effort to restore the $3 billion in border security funding would have had unanimous support among Republicans, but it was clear that Democrats would unite to block that funding. Republicans will continue to fight to overcome Democratic resistance to vigorous immigration and border enforcement.”

Senate passes broken record SCHIP bill
Enzi votes against bill, President vows to veto...again
11/1/07
Enzi took to the Senate floor before the Senate passed the bill, to voice his full support of the SCHIP program, especially Wyoming’s successful program, but stated his concern that this bill, H.R. 3963, still fails to put low-income children first. The bill expands SCHIP to higher income families, still enrolls adults, still removes 2 million individuals from private coverage and puts them on government-run health care, and still pays for the increase in funds through budget gimmicks..

Democrats Give Cold Shoulder to Energy Policy
Statement by U.S. Rep. Joe Barton, R-Texas Ranking Member, House Energy and Commerce Committee
10/30/07
In August, House Democrats answered a rising concern about increasing energy prices and declining supplies with an energy bill notable chiefly for its lack of energy. Their focus on energy was confined to writing a fine title, the 'New Direction for Energy Independence, National Security and Consumer Protection Act of 2007,' but their interest in energy abated after that.

Same song second verse: Dems playing games with kids health care
10/31/07
"A rose by any other name would smell as sweet, but this so-called "new" SCHIP plan that’s essentially the same as the old one still stinks," said Enzi, Wyoming’s senior senator and ranking member of the Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee. "I know today is Halloween but passing a bill that is as scary as the last one is not what a legislative body listening to the people and focusing on low income children should be doing. Let’s put politics aside, low-income children first, and get this chamber back on board with the original intention of the SCHIP program - helping children.".
|
Cubin Statement on SCHIP, Part II
10/25/07
“The Democrats latest attempt to reauthorize the SCHIP demonstrates yet again that the Democratic Party’s highest priority is not providing health insurance for low-income children, but expanding government at taxpayer’s expense. Democrats have not removed one dollar from their massive $35 billion expansion of the SCHIP program which still makes government funded health insurance available to illegal aliens and families with annual incomes over $70,000.

Dream Act Must be Put to Sleep
10/24/07
Cloture Vote On DREAM Act Amnesty Fails — 52-44
The Democrats are pushing this measure which they say is designed to allow school-aged kids to stay in the U.S. (amnesty) to attend college. The Heritage Foundation describes the bill, saying, "The bill purports to grant amnesty to individuals unlawfully in the United States who arrived before the age of 16. Publicized as a humanitarian measure for children, the bill would allow applicants to immediately receive conditional legal status, including eligibility for federal benefits like student loans."

Democrats Cut Illegals $6.5 Billion Check with Your Money
While 530,000 SCHIP-eligible kids go without health insurance, Democrats in Congress intend to spend billions of Americans’ tax dollars … on illegal immigrants
10/11/07
To qualify for federal matching funds, states must kick in their average share, 43 percent, first. If making it easier to provide taxpayer-funded health insurance to illegal immigrants will cost the federal taxpayer $3.7 billion, it will cost state taxpayers another $2.8 billion – for a grand total of $6.5 billion.
The bottom line: Democrats rubber-stamp $6.5 billion for illegal immigrants but say “no compromise” when it comes to getting children the health care they need and deserve.

The Anatomy of a Smear
9/28/07
Harry Reid Letter from the Senate ( This is a large file and will take a little time to open )
The effort here is simply to discredit people that they consider effective and powerful on the right ginning up, leading up into the '08 elections. They cannot beat us in the arena of ideas. They cannot challenge what we say and refute it and come out on top, so this is the anatomy of a smear. I'll show you how it works when we come back after the break. We have a bunch of sound bites here from Jim Webb, Jan Schakowsky, Frank Pallone, Democrats and senators, plus the Kerry statement that I read to you, all that coming up right after this.

President Bush Discusses Budget
9/24/07
The fiscal year ends in less than a week. Yet Congress has not sent a single appropriations bill to my desk. Not one. Instead, the congressional leaders may end up lumping all 12 outstanding appropriations bills into one massive trillion-dollar piece of legislation later this year. This would make it easier for members to sneak in all kinds of special projects, put in wasteful spending or pork barrel that they are not willing to debate in the open.

With millions of dollars to spend attacking Republicans, Democrats have gladly supported MoveOn's efforts even though the group clearly represents the fringe left of American society. Despite being so out of touch with mainstream America, MoveOn's grip over what the Democrats do is so strong, that even when an action is so out-of-bounds, such as the Petraeus ad, Democrats will continue to walk lock step with the group's mandates..

Funding War in Iraq
Senator Enzi's files
"The fact is that our troops are in Iraq and they are serving the security interests of our country. For the Democrats to hold up the funding for the supplies they need is not only bad policy, it’s dangerous," Enzi said. "I don’t agree that surrendering will help make us safer. I don’t believe delaying supplies to our men and women out in the field will keep us safe. It’s time for the opponents of the President to stop the games and get on with it. Get to work on a bill the President can sign. Our troops are depending on it," Enzi said.

Press Conference by the President
9/20/07
I have strongly supported S-CHIP as a governor, and I have done so as President. My 2008 budget proposed to increase S-CHIP funding by $5 billion over five years. It's a 20 percent increase over current levels of funding. Unfortunately, instead of working with the administration to enact this funding increase for children's health, Democrats in Congress have decided to pass a bill they know that will be vetoed. One of their leaders has even said such a veto would be, "a political victory.".

The Vast Military Wisdom of the Democrats
913/07
Democrats such as Harry Reid tried to discredit the general by calling him a liar and a mouth piece for the Bush administration. Using Poverty to Divide
8/29/07
The Democrats are pros at trying to gain a political advantage by dividing America. Rather than using rhetoric that will bring people together for common goals, they specialize in pitting one race against another, one gender against another, and one class against another. In particular, let's look at the poverty issue, where Democrat John Edwards recently said, "tens of millions of our fellow citizens are completely left out of the economic progress enjoyed by the individuals and corporations on the very top." I guess any discussion by a Democrat is incomplete without throwing in a reference to evil corporations.

A 465-page SCHIP bill loaded up with anonymous earmarks and rewritten in the middle of the night
9/21/07
Just hours after Rep. Hoyer spoke, Democrats proceeded to violate House rules and break their promises by proposing a 465-page bill to hugely expand the SCHIP program far beyond its original intent, financing it with the largest Medicare cut in history. Democrats rewrote the SCHIP bill at 3:10 a.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 1 and passed it at 7:35 p.m. that evening, preventing any opportunity for hearings on the re-written bill or a thorough reading of it by Members, the press or the public. This violated Speaker Pelosi’s promise that “Members should have at least 24 hours to examine bill and conference report text prior to its consideration. Rules governing floor debate
must be reported before 10 p.m. for a bill to be considered the following day.”

Enzi rebukes theatrical ploy to pull troops from Iraq
7/18/07
This morning the Senate voted on a procedural motion to end debate on an amendment that would require pulling troops out of Iraq. Senators defeated the measure by a vote of 52-47. Under Senate rules, it needed 60 votes to pass. When debate on the National Defense Authorization Act continues later this year, Enzi hopes Democratic leadership will allow a vote on the final bill, which would authorize funding for our troops, including an across-the-board pay raise..

Democrats Are Proposing Billions in Unnecessary Government Spending

Immigration amnesty bill goes down in flames, again
9/21/07
"If people keep insisting on the whole package there will be no package," Enzi said. "There are policies we can and should put in place to help resolve our immigration problems, but nothing is going to happen until we secure our borders and I won’t stomach amnesty. Neither will the American people. Hopefully this latest defeat will show proponents of this bill that you can’t just ram bad policy through. You have to listen to your constituents."

immigration "Like a noxious weed"
Immigration entangles Senate once more, but Enzi and small group of senators hold firm against amnesty.
Senate majority leaders bypassed the Judiciary Committee and took the immigration bill directly to the Senate floor, which is poor legislating, according to Enzi. He said it is the reason the bill is riddled with rotten spots.

Democrat energy package will fatigue country
6/22/07
"This bill relies too much on regulation and non-existent infrastructure to ease our energy woes," Enzi said. "One of the most glaring omissions in this bill was the absence of a coal-to-liquids provision. If we are ever going to kick our addiction to foreign oil we’ve got to increase fuel production here at home and coal-to-liquids technology is a big part of the answer."

Enzi set to strike amnesty portion of immigration bill
9/21/07
Enzi and a small group of about half a dozen senators, have broken away from the larger group of their pro-amnesty colleagues and are cosponsoring an amendment Senator David Vitter, R-La., is attempting to add to the Senate immigration proposal. The amendment would completely strike title VI of S. 1348, the immigration reform package. Title VI would provide visas for illegal immigrants now living within the U.S. U.S. Senator Craig Thomas is also cosponsoring the Vitter Amendment. In addition to cosponsoring the anti-amnesty measure, Enzi is also cosponsoring an amendment being proposed by Senator Jim Inhofe, R-Okla., that would make English the official language of the United States.

Enzi getting to the bottom of the border bill, says process flawed, reaffirms opposition to amnesty
5/18/07
"The first order of business is border security. We need to know who is coming in and if they aren’t coming here legally they should be sent home. We already have laws on the books and they should be enforced. If we need more resources to enforce them then so be it. Our physical and financial security depend on it," Enzi said.

Thomas: Immigration Deal Badly Bungled
5/17/07
“Senate deal-makers have failed to make the necessary changes to enact a strong national immigration policy. What we have before us will grant amnesty at most every turn. This policy affords a path to citizenship for nearly every type of illegal immigration possible.”
“This poorly crafted compromise will end up costing taxpayers trillions of dollars in entitlement spending. Our already straining Social Security and Medicare system will take on far more than it can handle – costing taxpayers for many years to come.” (Senator Craig Thomas)

Enzi points out budget problems
5/17/07
“Disappointing”, “failed”, “offensive” are all words U.S. Senator Mike, R-Wyo., used to describe the budget resolution put together by Senate and House Democrats.
“If this budget bill were the script for a movie, it would definitely be a horror movie,” Enzi said. “Unrestrained, unsustainable spending, higher taxes, no meaningful entitlement reform and zero savings- these are hardly the plans for a solid fiscal blueprint.”
The Senate passed the bill 52-40 with Enzi voting against the measure. The House passed the same resolution earlier today.

Budget hits taxpayers where it hurts
5/14/07
Enzi says President’s budget director right to issue appropriation veto warning
"This budget is a one-two punch that hits taxpayers squarely in the jaw. First it raises taxes, which blocks economic growth. Then it increases spending, which pushes our country deeper into debt," Enzi said. "The President is right on the money. When the government is in the red the American people are in the red. I am thankful the President is taking a hard stand for taxpayers against the waste, fraud, abuse and duplication that’s rolled up in this budget proposal."

Cubin Statement on War Supplemental
5/11/07
Different Bill, Same Bad Story
"Today on the floor of the House of Representatives, we have seen round two of a shameful attempt by the tax-and-spend Democrats to play politics with the funding our troops need to be safely and adequately prepared. Again, they have come to the floor with a veto-bound war funding bill that is altogether too similar to the one the President just vetoed. It is loaded with non-emergency spending, arbitrary benchmarks and deadlines that will set America on a course for surrender and defeat. Enough is enough.
|
A healthy recipe = no pork, no artificial timeline
5/7/07
Washington, D.C. – While the Democratic leaders fight the President about how to change an emergency spending bill that contains funding for our troops in Iraq, U.S. Senator Mike Enzi, R-Wyo., took action by cosponsoring new legislation that would simply provide the Department of Defense with the funding it requested.

Cubin Votes to Uphold President’s Veto
5/2/07
"The President’s veto rightfully stands. By voting to sustain the President’s veto today, I stand for an America that should be free from the fear of terrorism, and an Iraq that can operate as a stable democracy. I stand for victory in the Global War on Terror. The President has asked for a bill that will provide the necessary funding for our troops without arbitrary benchmarks and deadlines. That is precisely what I will continue to stand for.

Enzi supports President’s veto of Iraq bill
5/1/07
"The fact is that our troops are in Iraq and they are serving the security interests of our country. For the Democrats to hold up the funding for the supplies they need is not only bad policy, it’s dangerous," Enzi said. "I don’t agree that surrendering will help make us safer. Get to work on a bill the President can sign. Our troops are depending on it," Enzi said.
The Iraq supplemental spending legislation is loaded with non-war spending, a tactic used to get enough members to vote for the measure. It also requires withdrawal of U.S. troops from Iraq beginning in October. Enzi said an artificial withdrawal deadline imposed by Congress sends the wrong message to our enemies and our friends and these decisions should be made by military commanders on the ground.

Thomas: Democrats Handcuff U.S. Troops in Iraq
4/26/07
Troop Funding Narrowly Passes Senate, Sets Withdrawal Deadline
WASHINGTON – U.S. Senator Craig Thomas (R-Wyo.) today said Senate Democrats have recklessly pushed ahead with a troop funding bill that calls for a U.S. withdrawal beginning on October 1, 2007.
“We had a good report yesterday from the commanding General in Iraq – General David Petraeus,” Thomas said. “He indicated that we are seeing steady progress because of our new approach, and new military leadership. I’m disappointed that Senate Democrats insist on moving ahead with this ill-advised effort that makes it even more difficult to complete the mission.” (Senator Craig Thomas)

Washington, D.C. - U.S. Senator Mike Enzi, R-Wyo., expressed disappointment with the recently passed appropriations conference report he says is an attempt to micro-manage the war by using arbitrary time lines. Thomas: House Must Reconvene Now to Pass Troop Funding
4/10/07
Despite what the majority leader has indicated, it is too bad we have not been able to move this forward. The Senate went on Easter recess, of course. The majority stressed the importance of completing the bill before the end of March and getting it to the President without delay. Democrats in the Senate, of course, have blocked votes on the amendment to supplement the part that we could have--where they indicated they wanted to speed up the process. Regrettably, we are now on the 64th day since the President submitted his request to Congress, and we have still not sent up a bill. (Senator Craig Thomas)

Thomas' Address to Tax Coalition
4/10/07
As you know, the minimum wage bill and tax package were attached to the emergency supplemental. While the Senate significantly increased the amount of tax relief provided, the President has vowed to veto the bill because of the troop withdrawal language. Given that circumstance and the fact that we have not yet gone to conference on the stand-alone minimum wage and tax package, the outlook for that legislation remains uncertain. (Senator Craig Thomas)

Cubin Blasts Democrats’ Federal Budget
3/29/07
U.S. Representative Barbara Cubin (R-WY), a long-time deficit hawk and fiscal conservative, today voted against a federal budget that will raise taxes by $392.5 billion over the next 5 years.
“Democrats proved today they have no regard whatsoever for the budgets of hard-working Americans across the country,” Representative Cubin said. “The Democrats’ budget amounts to the largest tax hike in American history. While I take seriously my duty to be a responsible steward of taxpayer dollars, it is obvious that tax-and-spend Democrats do not.”

Democrats Deny Senator’s Effort to Restrict Pork Barrel Spending
WASHINGTON – U.S. Senator Craig Thomas (R-Wyo.) today was denied the opportunity to offer an amendment to the “Emergency Supplemental Appropriations Act,” which sought to remove billions of dollars in extraneous spending from the troop funding measure. .
“Democrats showed their true colors today by spending more and more of taxpayers’ hard earned dollars on their own pet projects.”
“I am disappointed that Democrats have decided to block any consideration of my amendment, which would impose fiscal discipline on a process that has run amok. It’s ridiculous that we couldn’t even have a vote.”

Dems lard up emergency war supplemental with unrelated, excessive spending
WASHINGTON – U.S. Senator Craig Thomas (R-Wyo.) today offered an amendment to the Democrat budget proposal to restore fiscal discipline back to the emergency spending process by stripping all spending unrelated to the war.
“Too often emergency supplemental bills are larded up with all kinds of pet projects and other spending that Members cannot pass through the regular budget process. By its very nature, emergency spending is above and beyond the approved budget,” Thomas said. (Senator Craig Thomas)

Cubin Blasts Emergency Supplemental
3/23/07
“No American wants to lose the war in Iraq,” Representative Cubin said. “Unfortunately, the bill the Democrats have pushed though the House today sets America on a course to lose the war. By setting arbitrary time lines for troop withdrawals, we are virtually telegraphing our war plans to our enemies and establishing a path for failure. I refuse to lead America down this path. A vote against this bill was a vote in support of our troops and the mission they are risking their lives to accomplish.”

Thomas: Budget Needs Far More Transparency
3/22/07
Thomas Amendment Sought To Eliminate Tax and Spend Gimmicks From Budget
“The Budget process is where we’re supposed to make hard choices, but this budget clearly fails to do that,” Thomas said. “We need increased transparency, spending restraint, and discipline in the budget process. We’re supposed to identify how much to spend, instead we’re asking taxpayers to sign 22 blank checks.”
“Anyone who lives on a budget knows that it requires tough choices – choices between different priorities – that’s the whole purpose of a budget,” Thomas said. “This budget creates almost two dozen ways to say ‘okey-dokey’ to uncontrolled spending.”
“By creating a reserve fund, Democrats are saying ‘we know we have to pay for some of these things, but we’ll worry about it later.' It’s like counting on winning the lottery to pay your mortgage.” (Senator Craig Thomas)

Washington, D.C. – Taxpayers can expect to spend more than 77 days a year working to pay their federal taxes, following the passage of a Democratic budget proposal that amounts to a $900 billion tax hike over the next five years. U.S. Senator Mike Enzi, R-Wyo., member of the Budget Committee, voted against the largest tax increase ever. Enzi also put forth an amendment to make it harder for the federal government to impose unfunded mandates on small business.

Wyo Senator Says Resolution Aimed at Tying Military Leaders’ Hands
“This is a critical time for our troops and our country. As a Marine I cannot imagine being in combat while members of Congress try to act like field generals,” Thomas said. “But that’s what the Democrat leaders are doing.”
“We just sent General Petraeus to Iraq a few weeks ago and already some in Congress want to say the new plan is failure before it even gets started. It’s ridiculous. Today we debated the Democrats’ seventeenth resolution on Iraq – that’s seventeen times in a few weeks they’ve sought to dictate military policy based on polling data.” (Senator Craig Thomas)

“Just last week Republican Leader McConnell requested that Senate vote on a package of security related amendments. But the Democrats decided to filibuster that package. Instead of having an honest debate on amendments to improve the bill, Democrats have tried to have it both ways by including a provision to give the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) screeners collective bargaining rights,” Thomas said. “I was very troubled by the inclusion of that provision. And I know many other members felt the same way.” (Senator Craig Thomas)
